Personal Property Exchange
While the majority of 1031 exchanges involve real property, with personal property accounting for only 5% of the exchange, there is room for tax deferred personal property exchange.
Personal property exchanges range from the exchange of corporate jets, commercial aircraft, ships, and other individual, big-ticket items to fleets of automobiles, trucks and computer equipment. Intangible personal property, such as licenses and copyrights also qualify in a 1031 exchange. Gold coins, paintings, and other collectibles may also be exchanged.
